Cedar shake shingles
From Cape Cod to California’s ornate Victorians, wood shakes and cedar shingles are a part of America’s past, present and future. This rustic part of American home building is a tradition that craftsman have been perfecting their art for hundreds of years. Whether the traditional “square butt” style or the multi-patterned fancier cut variety, it’s hard to beat the beauty of this natural, textured material.
So what is the difference between a traditional shingle and a wood shake? Shingles are machine-made and sawn into smooth, tapered boards that will range in size from approximately 3 or 4 inches wide to over 16 inches wide. Wood Shakes, on the other hand, are hand-split with a steel-bladed froe, then sawn in half. This gives them their rough surface and flat, smooth backing.
Today we continue to manufacture wooden shingles, both sawn and split. The modern shakes are distinctly different from the “old world” ones. Today’s more modern commercially available shakes are generally thicker than their historic hand-split cousins and are usually left “undressed” which means they have a rough, corrugated surface. The rough-surface shake is often considered to be more “rustic” and “historic”, when in fact this is a much more modern style.
